Nigeria: YABATECH Launches “Renewable Energy Now’ Project

Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) is making a courageous move toward renewable energy adoption through the “Renewable Energy Now – College Challenge,” led by Climate Action Advocate, Irene Oluwashina.

The initiative aims to transition the college to 60% renewable energy by 2030, making it a model for clean energy in Nigeria.

The project has achieved notable milestones under Irene Oluwashina’s leadership:

Interactive Learning Events: Workshops and expert panels engaged students and faculty, providing insights into the benefits of clean energy while debunking common misconceptions.

Student-Led Coalition: A multidisciplinary team of students is driving campus-wide sustainability initiatives, fostering leadership and advocacy skills.

Energy Audit: Collaborating with professional consultants, students analyzed energy consumption, identified inefficiencies, and proposed actionable solutions.

Solar Training: Participants were trained in solar design and installation, equipping them with practical skills to implement renewable solutions on campus and in their communities.

Advocacy Efforts: The team successfully lobbied college leadership by presenting data-driven findings to support the adoption of renewable energy strategies.

Irene Oluwashina, known for her commitment to sustainability, highlighted the importance of collective action in achieving these goals. “Transitioning to renewable energy is not just about reducing emissions; it’s about creating a culture of sustainability and empowering young leaders to drive this change,” she stated.

The project sets a precedent for other institutions in Nigeria, reinforcing Irene Oluwashina’s standing as a leading voice in clean energy and climate advocacy.
