APM Terminals Apapa has intensified its environmental sustainability efforts with a large-scale clean-up of key access roads within the Lagos Port Complex. The initiative reflects the growing adoption of environmental, social and governance (ESG) practices across Nigeria’s maritime and logistics sector.
The exercise, which is part of the company’s 2026 Go Green Week, saw employees clear waste from major corridors linking the Finger Jetty, the common user road, Eko Support Services, the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) Roundabout, Adekunle Road and the terminal’s main gate.
Workers removed and properly disposed of plastic materials, nylon packaging, wooden planks, bottles, stones and other debris that had accumulated along the port access roads. Officials of the Nigerian Ports Authority joined the exercise, highlighting increasing collaboration among port stakeholders to improve sanitation and operational efficiency within the country’s busiest seaport.
This year’s campaign, themed: “Healthy Ecosystems… More Resilient and Sustainable Business,” focuses on the relationship between environmental stewardship and long-term business resilience.
Speaking during the exercise, the Managing Director of APM Terminals Apapa, Kamal Alhraishat, said the initiative reflects the company’s commitment to reducing the environmental footprint of its operations while fostering a culture of shared responsibility among employees and other port users.
According to him, the company has also undertaken other sustainability initiatives during the week, including the planting of more than 25 bags of frangipani plants and Pride of Barbados seeds to enhance biodiversity within the terminal.
He added that an environmental town hall session will be organised for employees to promote responsible waste management and environmentally sustainable practices.
Felix Ugwuagbo, Health, Safety and Environment Manager at APM Terminals Apapa, said sustainability has become an integral part of the terminal’s operations, noting that cleaner port environments improve safety, support efficient cargo movement and strengthen supply chain resilience.
The Assistant Manager, Environment, Lagos Port Complex, Umar Ibrahim, commended the initiative, describing effective waste management as critical to protecting public health, preserving the environment and ensuring the smooth movement of cargo and people within the port.
The clean-up exercise reflects a broader shift by port operators towards integrating environmental sustainability into business operations, as global shipping and logistics companies increasingly align with international ESG standards and climate commitments.
The clean-up forms part of APM Terminals’ annual global Go Green Week campaign, which promotes practical environmental action across its worldwide operations as the company works towards achieving net-zero operations by 2040.
