Nigeria: NAFDAC Uncovers ₦2bn Counterfeit Alcohol Operation At Lagos Trade Fair Complex

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has uncovered a large-scale counterfeit alcoholic beverage operation at the Lagos International Trade Fair Complex, seizing products valued at more than ₦2 billion.

The operation was carried out by operatives of NAFDAC’s Investigation and Enforcement Directorate following credible intelligence about suspected illegal activities within the complex.

According to the information released on the raid, the operatives discovered more than 20 illegal stores operating from makeshift parking spaces on the premises.

The facilities were allegedly being used to blend and counterfeit popular alcoholic beverage brands, revalidate expired and unsafe drinks for resale, and stockpile prohibited imported products.

Two suspects were arrested during the enforcement operation, while the affected products were seized and evacuated from the premises.

The discovery raises concerns about the circulation of counterfeit and potentially unsafe alcoholic beverages in the Nigerian market, as such products may pose serious risks to public health.

NAFDAC’s enforcement action forms part of efforts to curb the distribution of fake, substandard and unregistered products and protect consumers from unsafe consumables.
