Shoprite Nigeria, a supermarket chain, has discontinued the use of nylon bags in its Lagos outlets in response to the Lagos State Government’s ban on single-use plastics.
The developments which commenced on January 1 aims to reduce environmental pollution in the state.
Tokunbo Wahab, the commissioner for environment and resources in the state, said enforcing a ban on single-use plastics is part of efforts to promote sustainable management of plastic waste and ensure a healthier and safer environment.
The new development was known through a public notice at the entrance of the Shoprite outlet in Surulere on Monday, informing customers of the new development.
The notice explained that the supermarket would no longer provide plastic straws, cutleries, or styrofoam packs in an effort to reduce plastic waste. Customers were encouraged to bring their reusable bags to support the initiative.
“In support of the Lagos state government’s ban on single-use plastic starting 1 January 2025, we will no longer provide these items in our stores — plastic straws, plastic cutleries and styrofoam packs,
“Let’s reduce plastic waste and protect our environment. You can help by bringing your reusable bags.” The notice reads.
Shoppers were given the option to either use empty cartons or purchase reusable customized bags sold for N500. While some customers opted for the reusable bags, others chose to use shopping trolleys to carry their goods to their vehicles.
A staff member at the retail store said customers have generally been complying with the changes, with no reported altercations so far.
