The United Nations has commended the Benue State Government for its implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), describing the state’s approach as a model for integrated development.
The commendation was given by the UN Deputy Secretary-General, Amina Mohammed, during a stakeholders’ engagement meeting held at the Government House in Makurdi.
Mohammed said Benue plays a critical role in Nigeria’s food systems and economic development, noting that the state has continued to make progress despite significant challenges, including insecurity.
She said ongoing efforts to support displaced populations through access to agricultural land and livelihood opportunities reflect a coordinated approach to advancing the SDGs.
According to her, integrating humanitarian response with long-term development is essential to restoring livelihoods, reducing dependency and promoting inclusive growth.
The UN official, however, expressed concern over the impact of insecurity on communities, noting that attacks have disrupted livelihoods and weakened social cohesion.
She stressed the need for sustained peacebuilding efforts, including strengthening early warning systems, rebuilding trust among communities and ensuring justice and accountability.
Mohammed also pledged continued UN support for investments in human capital, particularly in education, describing a resilient education system as critical to long-term recovery, inclusion and stability.
In his remarks, Governor Hyacinth Alia said the state’s stability is closely linked to Nigeria’s food security and regional supply chains.
He disclosed that more than 500,000 people have been displaced due to armed attacks, creating significant humanitarian challenges.
Alia said the state government has implemented measures to support internally displaced persons, including the provision of shelters, infrastructure and access to farmlands to enable affected households return to productive activities.
He added that interventions in affected communities include housing, water supply, education, healthcare services and livelihood support.
The governor called for stronger collaboration with the United Nations and development partners, emphasising the need for integrated systems and long-term solutions rather than short-term interventions.
He said the state is committed to building resilience, restoring livelihoods and driving inclusive development in line with the Sustainable Development Goals.
