Air quality across parts of Lagos has been rated “good” in several monitored locations, according to the latest Air Quality Index (AQI) report released by the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency.
The agency’s report, published on March 16, 2026, showed that areas including Cathedral Church CMS, Agege, Admiralty Way and Lennox Mall recorded low AQI readings, indicating good air quality levels.
Specific readings from the monitored sites include Lennox Mall, Victoria Island (4.3), Admiralty Way (4.0), Agege (3.8) and Cathedral Church CMS (2.8), all falling within the “good” category.
However, the report indicated moderate air quality levels in some locations. Abiola Gardens and Obafemi Awolowo Way recorded AQI readings of 17.8 and 15.9 respectively.
Reacting to the report, Mr. Weyinmi Okotie of the Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives commended LASEPA for sustaining air quality monitoring and making the data publicly available.
He noted that the availability of real-time or periodic air quality data remains limited in many Nigerian states, stressing the importance of sustained investment in monitoring infrastructure.
“We need to commend Lagos for even having air monitors and providing updates on air quality,” he said.
Okotie, however, cautioned that AQI readings should be interpreted within context, noting that measurements are typically averaged over a 24-hour period and may not fully reflect peak pollution levels during high-activity periods.
He explained that fluctuations in human activities, such as vehicular movement, as well as environmental factors like wind direction and the positioning of monitoring equipment, could influence recorded values.
According to him, an air monitoring station positioned upwind or downwind of pollution sources may capture varying pollutant concentrations.
He added that while the current data reflects progress, expanding monitoring systems remains critical to strengthening environmental governance and improving public awareness of air quality across the state.
