NAF Applauds LAWMA’s Swift Waste Evacuation, Backs Sustainable Sanitation Initiative

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Base in Ikeja has commended the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) for the prompt evacuation of accumulated waste within its premises, highlighting the role of inter-agency collaboration in advancing environmental sustainability in Lagos State.

The commendation was conveyed by Air Commodore Mohammad Imam, Commander of the 651 Base Services Group, during a courtesy visit to the LAWMA headquarters in Lagos.

Imam said LAWMA’s deployment of about 20 waste evacuation trucks significantly improved sanitation within the Base, describing the intervention as a demonstration of the Authority’s commitment to maintaining environmental cleanliness across the state.

“We are here to sincerely appreciate the management and staff of LAWMA for the excellent job done in evacuating waste from the Base,” he said.

He also welcomed the reintroduction of the state’s monthly environmental sanitation exercise, scheduled to commence on the last Saturday of April, noting that it would strengthen public hygiene and reinforce environmental responsibility among residents.

Imam pledged the support of the Nigerian Air Force in advancing sanitation efforts, adding that personnel from the Base would assist in ensuring compliance with environmental standards.

Responding, LAWMA Managing Director, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, appreciated the visit and the recognition of the Authority’s efforts, while calling for deeper collaboration between both institutions in operational and technical areas to improve waste management outcomes.

Gbadegesin said Lagos State was transitioning from a linear waste disposal system to a circular economy model that prioritises resource recovery and sustainability.

He cited the biodigester facility at Ikosi Fruit Market, where organic waste is converted into biogas for energy use, as a key example of this shift.

He also highlighted the LAWMA Academy initiative, which promotes environmental awareness by introducing schoolchildren to waste sorting and recycling practices.

According to him, the Authority will continue to strengthen partnerships with public institutions and communities to drive sustainable waste management and environmental stewardship across Lagos State.
