MTN has awarded $3,000 to a young Nigerian innovator, Olabisi Rafatu Emmanuel, for her eco-friendly menstrual product solution that converts waste into reusable materials.
The recognition came as she emerged runner-up in the 2024 Africa PatchiPanda Challenge, a continent-wide initiative by MTN to promote green tech entrepreneurship among African youth.
Emmanuel’s project stood out among entries from South Africa, Zambia, Cameroon, and Nigeria, offering a sustainable alternative to disposable products in a country where plastic consumption exceeds 2,000 tonnes daily, especially in Lagos.
The top prize went to Cameroon’s Moses Afopezi, whose AgricFresh platform helps farmers reduce post-harvest losses through smart storage and logistics solutions.
MTN Nigeria’s Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer, Mr Tobe Okigbo, noted that the initiative is about more than competition. “It’s about equipping Africa’s youth with the tools to shape a sustainable, inclusive future. Young Nigerians like Olabisi are proving they’re ready to lead,” he said.
Nompilo Morafo, MTN Group’s Chief Sustainability and Corporate Affairs Officer, added that the programme reflects MTN’s commitment to inclusion, empowerment, and market transformation.
The 2024 edition coincided with Earth Day celebrations and renewed discussions on Nigeria’s plastic ban policy. With youth unemployment exceeding 50 per cent and growing interest in a circular economy, MTN’s support for eco-innovation is both timely and strategic.
The Africa PatchiPanda Challenge is set to return in 2025 with broader reach, new partners, and greater support for young African changemakers.
