LDC5: Global Heads Show Support For ‘Plan For Rescue, Regeneration, Strength’ In Least Advanced Nations

Doha, Qatar – The Fifth UN Conference on the Least Developed Countries (LDC5) ended on Thursday, March 9th, with nations embracing substantial efforts to enforce the Doha Programme of Action (DPoA) – which seeks to restore and maintain fidelity between LDCs and their expansion partners – marking a transformative turning moment for the world’s most helpless countries.

The Doha Political Declaration was reached to a round of applause in the full hall of the Qatar National Convention Centre, where LDC5 has been underway since 5 March.

Ushering in a new era of unity, and huge socio-economic advantages for the world’s 46 least developed countries, the action comes nearly one year after the DPoA was taken up at the first part of the Conference on 17 March 2022 in New York.

The Declaration provides steps to enable transformation and unclose the possibility of LDCs, including the outcome of a design of resources or alternative means, going from cash transfers to exhaustive multi-hazard emergency relief and strength-building measures for the least developed countries.

“The commitments and responsibilities do not stop and start with the signing of the documents or attending Conferences. They must be necessary to our efforts towards 2030 and develop for the full decade,” said Amina Mohammed, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations at the closing general forum.

She pointed out that the five key deliverables from the DPoA – an online university, a graduation aid box, a food stock holding solution, an acquisition help headquarters, and a crisis mitigation and resilience building tool – “will answer important issues facing the LDCs, and set the path for a more successful, fair future”.

Discussions at LDC5 centered on the performance of the DPoA. The consensuses achieved this week will help LDCs manage recent problems, from the COVID-19 pandemic to weather change, and help them get back on route with the SDGs and make improvements towards graduation from the LDC class.
