Iniungon, Benue – The Vote for Climate Coalition in Benue has carried out a community sensitisation on the need for local people to support individuals who are interested in climate change.
The sensitisation programme was held in Iniungon community in Wadata, Makurdi, Benue State, a community which was ravaged by the 2022 floods, which displaced over 2,000 persons in the community and its surroundings, washing away farmlands and devastated many houses.
The Team Lead of the Global Initiative for Food Security and Ecosystem Preservation (GIFSEP), Mr. David Michael Terungwa, who spoke on behalf of the Vote for Climate Coalition, characterised the flooding as world climate change.
Mr. David informed the community about the NiMet flooding forecasts for 2023 which means that Benue State and 32 other states are at peril of flooding. He encouraged the community members to wash up all the sewerages and water canals in the community and take up good trash removal strategies and other biodegradable practices.
To help solve the problem of lack of electric power in the community, solar tools were shared with 50 households in the community to show the ability of solar and inexhaustible power as an option to fossil fuels. The recipients were coached on the use, power productivity, and care of the solar systems.
The Benue Vote for Climate community effort was coordinated by GIFSEP in association with the Eunice Spring of Life Foundation (ESLF) and Gender and Environmental Risk Reduction Initiative (GERI) with the aid of 350 Africa.
