The ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development (EBID), in collaboration with ASKY Airlines and Plan International Togo, has organised a “Girls in Aviation Day” initiative as part of activities marking International Women’s Day (IWD) 2026.
The event, held recently at the Gnassingbé Eyadéma International Airport in Lomé, brought together 20 girls for an immersive learning experience designed to expand their awareness of career opportunities in aviation, aerospace, and science and technology fields.
The initiative forms part of broader efforts by the partners to advance gender inclusion and human capital development in West Africa, particularly by addressing the underrepresentation of women in technical and high-growth sectors.
Participants engaged in guided tours and practical sessions covering key airport operations, including terminal management, baggage handling systems, cockpit procedures, and air traffic control. The programme aimed to provide early exposure to aviation careers while strengthening confidence and interest in STEM-related pathways.
Speaking at the event, EBID’s Director of Private Sector Operations, Hughes Goa, said investing in young women is critical to building a more inclusive and resilient workforce across the ECOWAS region. He noted that the bank remains committed to supporting education, mentorship, and career development opportunities for girls as part of its development mandate.
The initiative also aligns with EBID’s forthcoming adoption of the “Gender Equality for Public Institutions” Seal, in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme and the ECOWAS Commission.
ASKY Airlines’ Commercial Director, Daté Tévi-Bénissan, highlighted the importance of building a diverse talent pipeline in the aviation sector, noting that increased female participation is essential for long-term industry sustainability and innovation.
Plan International Togo described the programme as a strategic platform for empowering girls, adding that it contributes to creating inclusive environments where young women can explore diverse career paths and develop leadership skills.
The partners said the initiative reflects a shared commitment to promoting gender equality, expanding access to emerging opportunities, and supporting the next generation of women leaders in West Africa.
