Morocco: African Development Bank Launches $1 Million Technical Assistance To Boost Green Finance At Crédit Agricole Du Maroc

The African Development Bank Group (AfDB) has launched a $1 million technical assistance programme designed to strengthen the green finance capabilities of the Crédit Agricole du Maroc Group (GCAM) and accelerate climate-aligned investment within Morocco’s financial sector.

The programme was unveiled recently at a launch event in Rabat under the AfDB’s African Green Banks Initiative, in partnership with the Multilateral Cooperation Center for Development Finance.

Officials said the initiative aims to enhance GCAM’s institutional, operational and financial capacities, enabling the bank to mobilise a broader range of concessional and private capital for climate-resilient and low-carbon projects across Morocco.

The technical support will focus on enabling GCAM to structure, finance and monitor sustainable investments in key sectors such as sustainable agriculture, water management, clean energy, and resilient infrastructure, areas central to the kingdom’s environmental and climate priorities.

AfDB officials highlighted that the programme will also help align national financial flows with Morocco’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and climate objectives, strengthening the bank’s climate impact tracking and reporting to bolster investor confidence and unlock additional green capital.

Officials described the technical assistance as part of broader efforts to empower local financial institutions as catalysts for climate finance, and to reinforce pathways for scaling climate investment across Africa. Strengthening domestic capacity to channel climate finance was seen as essential for Morocco to deliver on mitigation and adaptation outcomes tied to its climate strategy.

The initiative aligns with the AfDB’s broader agenda under its African Green Banks Initiative, which seeks to build ecosystems of green financing institutions capable of supporting countries’ transitions toward low-carbon, climate-resilient growth.
