Digital Library Initiative Targets Education Inequality In South Africa

Learners at Louwville High School in Vredenburg have received a mobile digital library aimed at improving access to technology-enabled education, as part of efforts to advance digital inclusion in underserved communities.

The facility was handed over recently by Deputy Minister in the Presidency, Nonceba Mhlauli, who said the initiative aligns with government’s commitment to building an inclusive, digitally society.

The mobile digital library provides offline access to curriculum-aligned educational content, enabling both learners and teachers to engage with interactive learning tools despite connectivity challenges.

Mhlauli said the intervention addresses persistent inequalities in South Africa’s education system, where limited infrastructure continues to exclude many learners from digital opportunities.

She noted that access to education, information and opportunity are fundamental rights increasingly tied to digital access, particularly in a knowledge-driven global economy.

The Deputy Minister added that the initiative forms part of broader efforts to improve learning outcomes while equipping students with critical skills such as coding, research and problem-solving.

She urged educators, parents and the wider community to safeguard and effectively utilise the resource, describing it as a shared asset that requires collective responsibility.

The project was delivered through a partnership involving government and private sector stakeholders, including Kumba Iron Ore, Transnet and RuraTech.

Mhlauli said such collaborations are essential to scaling sustainable development interventions, noting that coordinated investment and expertise can accelerate progress in bridging the digital divide.

The rollout of mobile digital libraries is expected to contribute to more equitable access to quality education, while supporting long-term socio-economic inclusion through digital empowerment.
