Chad’s Ministry of Environment has launched a nationwide public awareness campaign to support the implementation of Law No. 023, a recently adopted legal framework that strengthens environmental protection and natural resource management across the country.
Announced on 12 January 2026, the campaign is designed to familiarise citizens, local authorities, community groups and civil society organisations with the provisions of the new law, including the rights, responsibilities and compliance obligations it introduces. From a sustainability perspective, officials say the success of the legislation will hinge not only on enforcement, but on broad public understanding and participation.
Law No. 023 establishes clearer standards for pollution control, sustainable use of natural resources and ecosystem conservation, addressing long-standing environmental pressures such as deforestation, land degradation and unmanaged waste. To translate the law from statute to practice, the Ministry has developed an outreach strategy that combines regional workshops, educational materials, media engagement and structured stakeholder consultations.
The campaign will be rolled out across multiple regions, with particular attention to environmentally vulnerable areas where ecological degradation poses direct risks to livelihoods, food security and public health. By improving legal literacy at the community level, authorities aim to empower citizens to recognise environmental violations, understand reporting mechanisms and adopt more sustainable practices aligned with national regulations.
Inclusivity is a central pillar of the initiative. Outreach activities are expected to involve traditional leaders, youth groups and women’s associations, reflecting the government’s view that effective environmental governance requires collective ownership. In addition to in-person engagements, the Ministry plans to use radio programming, print publications and social media to communicate key aspects of the law in accessible formats.
According to the Ministry of Environment, raising awareness of Law No. 023 is a critical step toward improving compliance, strengthening accountability and fostering a culture of environmental stewardship. The campaign also aligns with Chad’s broader sustainability and climate resilience objectives, reinforcing the role of informed and engaged citizens in protecting water resources, soils, forests and biodiversity amid growing environmental and climate-related challenges.
