Nigeria: Fidelity Bank Boost Environmental Sustainability With Tree-Planting Initiative At Elegushi Beach

Fidelity Bank Plc has reinforced its environmental sustainability agenda with a tree-planting and beach clean-up exercise at Elegushi Beach, Lekki, Lagos, underscoring the growing role of the private sector in climate action and ecosystem protection.

The initiative, carried out in partnership with Greenfingers Wildlife Initiative, forms part of the bank’s Corporate Social Responsibility platform, the Fidelity Helping Hands Programme (FHHP). Notably, the project was conceived and driven by Fidelity Bank’s newly inducted employees, known internally as the Vault Class, who selected environmental conservation as their community impact focus. The bank complemented the employees’ contribution with matching funds to ensure the project’s full delivery.

Speaking at the event, Divisional Head, Brand and Communications at Fidelity Bank, Dr Meksley Nwagboh, said the intervention reflects the institution’s long-term commitment to environmental stewardship rather than a one-off activity.

“Environmental preservation is a core pillar of our CSR strategy,” Nwagboh said. “Protecting the planet is a shared responsibility, and through initiatives like tree planting and coastal clean-ups, we are taking practical steps to reduce climate risks and safeguard marine and terrestrial ecosystems.”

Beyond planting trees to strengthen coastal resilience, Fidelity Bank volunteers also removed plastic and other waste from the shoreline, addressing pollution that threatens aquatic life. Nwagboh added that the bank continues to roll out conservation initiatives nationwide and maintains an active partnership with the Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF).

Founder of Greenfingers Wildlife Initiative, Mr Chinedu Mogbo, described the collaboration as mission-aligned, noting that tree planting supports biodiversity, enhances environmental safety, and restores ecological balance for both humans and wildlife.

The Elegushi Beach exercise adds to Fidelity Bank’s expanding portfolio of sustainability actions focused on climate mitigation, biodiversity protection, and community-driven environmental awareness, signalling how financial institutions can contribute meaningfully to Nigeria’s green transition.
